Doctora
I'd been in med school for about two or three days, crisp white coat, bright face, so much excitement and terror when a classmate approached me and told me:
Henceforth started the rollercoaster no MCAT could prepare you for. It's a rollercoaster for everyone, but needless to say, it carries a whole other dimension as a Latina in Wisconsin. It becomes ingrained in your being, you're now simultaneously burdened with and honored by such an immense opportunity."Do you realize you're the only Hispanic in our class?"
About a year later, my then-therapist would confide: "I have to tell you, I can't believe how much of your med school experience so far surrounds you race".
Three years later, that hasn't really changed.
Some deep reflections on the journey, hope for the future and maybe some inspirations for those following.
